Emails and invoices misusing the name of Bird & Bird LLP in relation to supposed unpaid invoices.

What is the scam?

Emails and invoices have been sent from an individual called ‘Victoria MacDuff' claiming to be a Partner at the Bird & Bird LLP in relation to supposed unpaid invoices.

The SRA has seen emails that were sent using email addresses of 'accounts@twobirdslaw.onmicrosoft.com', ‘dd@lwllp.site', ‘vmc@lwllp.site' and ‘dv@lwllp.site'.

The supposed invoices related to arrears of professional fees. The invoices misuse the name and registered address of Bird & Bird LLP.

Any business or transaction through the email addresses above are not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a firm of solicitors called Bird & Bird LLP. The head office is at 12 New Fetter Lane London EC4A 1JP. The email domain used by the firm is @twobirds.com

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine solicitor called Victoria MacDuff, who is a Partner at another firm of solicitors called Slaughter and May.

Bird & Bird LLP and Victoria MacDuff have confirmed that they do not have any connection to the emails referred to in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
